Social Security Electronic Payments: What Members Need to Know

Social Security Benefits Moving to Electronic Payments Only Starting September 30

Social Security Is Going Paperless

Starting September 30, 2025, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will stop mailing paper checks. From that date forward, you’ll need to receive your benefits as Social Security electronic payments.

At Green Country Federal Credit Union, we want to help you prepare so your benefits continue to arrive safely and on time.

What Are Social Security Electronic Payments?

Social Security electronic payments go straight into your bank account or onto a prepaid debit card. Instead of waiting for the mail, your money arrives electronically—fast, secure, and ready to use.

Already using direct deposit? You’re good to go. Still getting a paper check? Choose an electronic option before September 30, 2025.

Why Switch to Electronic Payments?

The SSA is making this change because electronic payments are:

  • Faster: Deposits arrive on time without mail delays.

  • More Secure: Electronic payments are far less likely to be lost or stolen.

  • Cost-Effective: Electronic delivery saves millions of taxpayer dollars every year.

Your Options for Receiving Benefits

If you still get paper checks, you can switch to Social Security electronic payments in two easy ways:

Direct Deposit into Your Green Country FCU Account

  • Deposit your benefits straight into your checking or savings account.

  • Access your money immediately with no risk of lost or delayed checks.

Direct Express® Debit Card

  • Use a prepaid debit card if you don’t have a bank account.

  • Receive funds automatically each month and spend them anywhere debit cards are accepted.
