Shop Safely Online This Holiday Season
Smart tips to protect your money, your information, and your peace of mind.
The holiday season is a busy time in Green Country. Between school events, family gatherings, and everything else life throws at us, shopping online can feel like the easiest way to get things done. But it’s also the time of year when scammers become more active—especially targeting hardworking Oklahomans looking for good deals.
At Green Country Federal Credit Union, we want you to enjoy your holiday shopping without worry. And remember: members get free access to Enrich, our online financial education hub, where you can learn more about protecting your identity, budgeting for the season, and staying financially confident.
1. Stick to Websites You Know and Trust
When you’re hunting for gifts, a “too good to be true” deal can be tempting. But scammers often create fake websites with big discounts to lure in shoppers.
Before you buy:
Check the URL—does it start with https://?
Look for small spelling errors or odd phrasing on the site.
Search for customer reviews you can verify.

2. Use Strong, Unique Passwords
Using the same password everywhere makes it easier for criminals to access your accounts.
Try this:
Pick a short phrase you can remember (like RedDirtSunset!) and change it slightly for each shopping site.
Even better, use a password manager to keep everything secure and organized.
Tip:
Check out “How to Create a Strong Password — That You Won’t Forget”.
3. Avoid Public Wi-Fi for Purchases
Free Wi-Fi at coffee shops is convenient, but not always secure. Use your home network or mobile hotspot when making purchases or entering account info.

4. Watch Out for Fake Shipping Notifications
Scammers send out bogus “Your package is delayed” or “Click to track your order” messages.
Stay safe:
Don’t click links from unknown senders
Log in directly to the retailer’s website
When in doubt, delete

5. Keep an Eye on Your Accounts
Fraud sometimes starts with small, sneaky charges. Log into Online Banking or our mobile app regularly to review transactions.
Extra support:
Enrich offers mini-checkups and quizzes that help you understand your personal risk level and strengthen your security habits. Also, check out this helpful article on “How Digital Banking Can Help Reduce Fraud”.
6. Use Secure Payment Methods
Credit and debit cards offer more protection than gift cards or unknown apps.
Safe choices include:
Visa or Mastercard
PayPal
Apple Pay / Google Pay

7. Be Cautious With Holiday Emails and Ads
Scammers love sending “too good to be true” holiday deals.
Before clicking:
Check the sender’s email
Hover over links
Delete anything that feels off
8. Protect the Kids, Too
Kids often don’t realize how easy it is to fall for “free game credits” or questionable downloads.
Remind them:
Never save card info
Avoid unknown downloads
Ask before purchasing
