Green Country Federal Credit Union and First Oklahoma Federal Credit Union Announce Intent to Merge

NCUA Approves Merger Plan; First Oklahoma Members to Vote in January 2026

Sand Springs, OK — Green Country Federal Credit Union (Green Country FCU) and First Oklahoma Federal Credit Union (First Oklahoma FCU) have announced their intent to merge, following approval of the merger plan by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). The proposal will now move forward to a vote of First Oklahoma’s membership.

A Combined Vision Rooted in Shared History

Green Country FCU traces its roots back more than 50 years, beginning as ARMCO Steel Credit Union in Sand Springs before expanding into a full-service, community-focused financial institution. Today, Green Country FCU serves individuals, families, and small businesses across northeastern Oklahoma through its locations in Sand Springs, Prattville, and Coweta. The credit union is both a certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) and a Low-Income Designated credit union—reinforcing its mission to support underserved communities and strengthen access to affordable financial services.

First Oklahoma FCU, founded in 1923 as Tulsa Postal Employees Credit Union, is recognized as Oklahoma’s first credit union. What began as a small cooperative serving postal workers has grown into a broader membership community served through branches in Tulsa and Glenpool, maintaining a long tradition of providing honest, accessible financial services to working families.

If approved, the combined credit union will serve members across seven counties in Northeastern Oklahoma—Creek, Okmulgee, Osage, Pawnee, Rogers, Tulsa, and Wagoner—expanding reach, resources, and the ability to support the working families and small businesses that make Oklahoma communities strong.

Stronger Together for Working Oklahoma Families

“Both credit unions were built to serve everyday Oklahomans—people who work hard, raise families, and help make our local businesses thrive,” said Brandon Grell, President & CEO of Green Country FCU. “By joining together, we can offer more locations, stronger technology, expanded lending options, and deeper support for small businesses. We will continue making local decisions, and we will continue putting members first.”

For First Oklahoma FCU, the partnership represents a meaningful step forward in continuing its long-standing commitment to member service. By combining with Green Country FCU, First Oklahoma can expand the tools, resources, and long-term support available to its members while preserving the honest, people-first approach that has defined it for more than a century.

“We’re a small crew, but we look out for our people,” said Bill Hughart, Chairman of the Board of First Oklahoma FCU. “Joining with Green Country helps us keep moving forward and gives our members more tools to work with. That’s why I believe this is the right move.”

Ed Alexander, Chairman of the Board at Green Country FCU, added: “This partnership aligns two organizations that have always prioritized members above everything else. By combining resources, we can offer greater efficiencies, maintain financial strength, and expand our impact. Our boards are committed to ensuring a smooth and transparent process every step of the way.”

What Members Can Expect After Approval

Voting will conclude in January 2026. If approved, the merger would take effect on April 1, 2026. All First Oklahoma FCU employees will be offered positions with the combined organization so members can expect the same friendly faces and familiar service they rely on. After the merger, members of both credit unions will be able to visit any of the five branch locations across Northeastern Oklahoma.

“We hope every First Oklahoma member will participate in the vote,” Grell said. “This partnership strengthens both credit unions, and we’re excited about the benefits it will bring to the people we serve.”
